Vacancy for Groundsman

The Hurlingham Club is a prestigious private members’ club situated on the banks of the River Thames in South West London.

Outdoor sports facilities include 30 grass tennis courts, a cricket ground, summer putting greens, a winter pitch and putt golf course and over one hectare of fine turf surfaces consisting of 10 croquet lawns and two bowling greens.

A vacancy has arisen for a Groundsman to work in a 10 strong team maintaining all of the above facilities to the highest standards.

The ideal candidate will have relevant previous experience and appropriate technical knowledge of fine turf management to Level 2 NPTC or better. Salary is c. £18K - £20K plus excellent benefits. There is no accommodation available with this position.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Groundsperson

GRADE: 4

REPORTING TO: Grounds Manager

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1. OVERALL PURPOSE

a) To undertake general horticultural, turf and external maintenance operations as directed by the section Supervisor.Reporting to the Grounds Manager, through the Section Supervisor.

2. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

a) To be alert to, report and treat the common pests, fungi and diseases.

b) To make recommendations for specific improvements to her/his area of responsibility, as appropriate.

c) To undertake basic setting out, marking, and maintenance of sports areas as directed.

d) To maintain the all-weather sports surfaces, including sand filled synthetic grass, macadam and synthetic surfaces.

e) To safely, and competently operate and maintain strimmers, hedgecutters, lawnmowers, chainsaws, tractors and other horticultural machinery.

f) To maintain and safe guard such tools and machinery as are provided in a safe, and effective condition.

g) Area maintenance to include leaf and litter clearance, hedge trimming, grass cutting, mulching, scrub clearance, weeding and general cleaning.

h) Application of horticultural chemicals in a safe and controlled manner, using portable and mounted spray equipment as directed.

i) Watering and feeding of turf areas, including operation of automatic irrigation systems.

j) Support to Club events, through erection of tents and marquees, hardstandings and protective fences, laying out and collecting furniture and litter bins.

k) To participate in the Departmental weekend duty rota.

l) To undertake such other tasks as the Club’s management might reasonably consider appropriate.

m) To attend such personal development, safety, and technical skills and proficiency training as the Club might consider appropriate to the position.
